There is now a new product on the market for procurement professionals to consider which will specifically target cost reduction and the painfully slow process of sourcing the best shipping prices.
The global distribution giant Hapag-Lloyd has launched an innovative online service this week called Quick Quotes, a platform capable of delivering binding container quotes to any customer in moments.
Spend analytics recently provided by Zencargo showed that inefficiencies in obtaining reliable shipment quotes cost supply chains billions of dollars annually in the form of wasted time. Very few shipping companies have developed advanced methods to compare transport costs, a deficiency that could be causing them to lose both money and competitive pricing benefits.
To use the service, customers must first log in to Hapag-Lloyd’s website. What’s more, once it generates a quote – a process that only takes minutes – the company promises that this will be binding.
The company’s CEO, Rolf Haben Jansen, said that digitising the firm’s services and making business easier was very important to the shipping giant’s standing. He added, “Quick Quotes enables our customers globally to get a fast quotation at any time, which will contribute to a better and more efficient customer experience.”
The online supply relationship management and procurement news source SupplyChainDive.com compared the new service with the process of obtaining shipping quotes for a twenty-foot container for freight of any kind (FAK) from the top six carriers. Only Hapag-Lloyd was able to deliver a binding quote online within moments of the inquiry.
The lack of transparency in transport pricing has, finally, started to be addressed over the last year by a range of freight forwarders, each of whom have developed online systems. Big names to have launched their own online platforms include Maersk’s Damco, Kuehne + Nagel and DHL.
The shipping marketplace is known to be extraordinarily competitive. These online solutions are finally giving carriers a means of distinguishing their service for shippers. But, as matters stand, Hapag-Lloyd is one in a tiny number that is capable of providing an instant quote service. Other shipment companies had better catch up soon to ensure that they don’t lose their competitive edge.
