Government-led taskforce to make supply chains sustainable

The UK Government has just created a new “taskforce” comprising 17 business leaders, who will be working with businesses to help them make their supply chains more sustainable by ensuring they do not harm or overuse natural resources.

The taskforce, known as the Global Resource Initiative (GRI) taskforce, has been assembled by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs and the Department for International Development.

The business leaders in the group are from the public sector, NGOs and the private sector. High-profile organisations like McDonald’s, Tesco, Cargill and Legal & General are represented, as well as NGOs like Forest Coalition and WWF. The Green Finance Institute’s CEO Rhian-Mari Thomas is also a part of it.

The group has announced that it will hold several summits before it produces a report that will inform businesses, both big and small, across all sectors in the UK of the steps they should take if they are keen to reduce their carbon footprints in their supply chains. The report, which will be published by the end of 2020, will highlight water consumption, carbon emissions, deforestation and soil degradation in supply chains that involve soy, beef and palm oil.

Therese Coffey, the environment minister, pointed out that the document will play a major role in helping businesses to help the country to meet commitments made in the 25-year Environment Plan and net-zero target for 2050.

Sir Ian Cheshire, who is the chairman of Barclays, will be chairing the task force. Sir Cheshire pointed out that it will provide businesses with an opportunity to ensure sustainable usage of land and alter the international supply chains. In addition, the task force will also create a model that can inspire other countries to emulate.
