Winners review of CIPS award winners 2018

Each year, CIPS recognises individuals or organisations in the fields of supply chain and procurement through the CIPS Supply Management Award. The award is highly prestigious and much coveted by competing organisations. In 2018, the award ceremony witnessed 1,000 procurement professionals gathering at Grosvenor House on 12 September 2018 to celebrate all the dedicated work that has taken place over the last year.

The winners for each category are as follows:

Best Contribution to Corporate Responsibility 

Northumbrian Water Group won the prize in this category beating several renowned organisations.

Best Contribution to the Reputation of the Profession 

Barkers beat the Department for International Development and ABB to win this award.

Best Cross-Functional Teamwork Project 

The Ministry of Justice won the award for language translation and interpretation, which saw the Ministry awarding contracts to smaller service providers. This resulted in higher levels of satisfaction among those using the services.

Best People Development Initiative 

The Cabinet Office – Government Commercial Function won the Best People Development Initiative after it took up the challenge to become the best commercial enterprise in the UK.

Best Process Improvement Initiative 

United Utilities came up with a market testing method for procurement and helped the company save millions.

Best Procurement Consultancy Project 

Jaguar Land Rover won the award for incentivising procurement of components to prevent cost from rising.

Best Public Procurement Project 

Cornwall Council Leisure Centre won the award after coming up with an innovative way to contract out the centre while getting the maintenance work done.

Best Procurement Diversity Initiative

Intel won the award to embracing diversity in procurement and hopes to achieve spends of £1bn by 2020 by procuring from diverse-owned suppliers.

Best Supplier Relationship Management 

British Steel in collaboration with Heraeus Electro-Nite has saved millions of pounds while also becoming a technologically advanced organisation.

Best Third Sector/ Not-for-profit Procurement Project 

Together for Sustainability is a procurement-based initiative that is looking to make the procurement process in chemical companies more transparent and sustainable. This not-for-profit procurement project was launched by the CPOs of Bayer, Solvay, BASF, Evonik, Henkel and Lanxess.

International Procurement Project 

NHS Arden & GEM CSU helped the NHS save millions of pounds by contracting specialised cancer treatment to hospitals in Germany rather than sending cancer patients to the US, as it was done previously.

Most Improved Procurement Operation – Start up 

A14 Integrated Delivery was set up in less than 18 months to create a specialised system to manage a spend of £1.5bn. This helped to save £39m.

Most Improved Procurement Operation – Step change 

Virgin Atlantic Limited was awarded the prize for becoming into a strategic procurement partner.

Most Innovative Use of Technology

When CBRE could not find a supplier portal flexible enough for its needs, it created its own bespoke supplier portal after partnering with a small software organisation. It ended up with a portal that both stakeholders and suppliers love using.

CIPS Young Procurement and Supply Professional of the Year 

The winner was Karen Moorhouse from the City of London Corporation. She beat five other nominees for this highly coveted prize.

The CIPS Supply Management Award 2018 was an opportunity for attendees to find out more about the winning companies and individuals and also to network.
